Toxins in Personal Care and Hygiene Products

Every product we apply to our bodies — soap, lotion, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, makeup — offers a direct path into the bloodstream. Many of these products contain ingredients that aren’t just irritants; they’re biologically active chemicals.

🚩 Common toxins include:

  • Phthalates (often hidden under “fragrance”) – disrupt hormones, impact fertility, and have been linked to asthma and developmental issues.
  • Parabens – mimic estrogen and have been found in breast tissue; linked to hormone disruption.
  • Triclosan – an antibacterial banned from soaps but still found in some toothpastes and deodorants; disrupts thyroid hormones and harms gut flora.
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives – like DMDM hydantoin or quaternium-15; known allergens and carcinogens.
  • PEGs, sulfates, and synthetic dyes – may irritate the skin and increase permeability.

Because we use these products daily — often in combination — they create a continuous, low-dose exposure.
