Pets as Exposure Pathways

Pets can unknowingly carry toxins into — and throughout — your home.

🐾 Common pet-related exposure issues:

  • Flea and tick treatments (collars, spot-on products, dips) contain neurotoxic pesticides that can rub off onto skin, furniture, and bedding.
  • Scented shampoos and grooming products often contain synthetic fragrance and preservatives.
  • Tracking in toxins from lawns or sidewalks: pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, and mold spores.

✅ Healthier pet care options:

  • Use veterinarian-approved natural flea/tick prevention (e.g. Wondercide, Cedarcide — essential oil-based but verify pet safety).
  • Wipe paws with a damp cloth or unscented baby wipe after outdoor walks.
  • Bathe with unscented, non-toxic pet shampoos (e.g., Earthbath Oatmeal & Aloe, Vermont Soap Pet Shampoo).
  • Keep bedding and pet gear washed regularly with fragrance-free, hypoallergenic detergent.

Pets are part of the family — but they need a low-toxin environment, too. Their exposures often mirror ours, and in small animals, even trace chemicals can accumulate rapidly.
