Dust as a Toxic Reservoir

Household dust isn’t just dirt. It’s a complex mixture of dead skin cells, textile fibers, outdoor pollution particles, mold spores, pet dander — and chemical residues.

⚠️ What’s found in dust:

  • Phthalates from vinyl flooring, plastics, and fragrances
  • Flame retardants from furniture and electronics
  • Pesticide residues from indoor or lawn applications
  • Heavy metals from old paint or tracked-in soil
  • PFAS (forever chemicals) shed from treated textiles
  • Mold fragments from water-damaged materials

Dust sits on floors, furniture, bedding, and air vents — and it gets stirred up when you vacuum, walk, or open windows. Children and pets are especially vulnerable since they’re closer to the ground and more likely to ingest dust by touching objects and putting their hands (or paws) in their mouths.
