Food Storage and Packaging

Toxic chemicals don’t just come from cooking — they also leach from what we store, heat, or serve food in.

⚠️ Common hazards:

  • Plastic containers and wraps: Often contain BPA, BPS, or phthalates, which migrate into food — especially when heated or used with fatty or acidic foods.
  • Canned foods: The linings often contain BPA or similar chemicals unless labeled otherwise.
  • Melamine dishware: Can leach formaldehyde, especially with hot or acidic foods.
  • Takeout containers and fast-food wrappers: Many are coated with PFAS for grease resistance.

✅ Safer storage solutions:

  • Glass containers (Pyrex, Anchor Hocking): Microwave and dishwasher safe.
  • Stainless steel bento boxes or bowls.
  • Beeswax wraps: Reusable alternative to plastic wrap.
  • Silicone bags and lids: Look for platinum-grade, BPA-free silicone.
  • Tetra Pak cartons or food packed in glass jars over canned goods when possible.
