Strategies for a Toxin-Free Living Space
You don’t need to replace everything overnight. Focus first on high-use, high-contact areas — especially where you sleep, sit, or let kids play.
✅ When buying new:
- Choose solid wood furniture without plywood or MDF (or look for CARB II compliant or formaldehyde-free options).
- Look for GOTS-certified (organic) or Oeko-Tex Standard 100 textiles.
- Select natural fiber rugs (e.g., wool, jute, cotton) with no chemical backing.
- Use low- or zero-VOC paints and adhesives (e.g., Benjamin Moore Natura, ECOS Paints).
♻️ When keeping or restoring:
- Air out new items outdoors or in garages for a few days or weeks before bringing them in.
- Use a HEPA air purifier and ventilate often to help reduce VOCs and particles.
- Cover cushions and mattresses with organic cotton or wool covers to create a physical barrier between your body and chemical-laden foam.
- Seal particleboard or plywood with low-VOC shellac or AFM SafeCoat to reduce off-gassing.
👶 Children’s rooms:
- Prioritize cleanable floors, organic bedding, and untreated furniture.
- Avoid foam-based play mats, PVC curtains, and plastic furniture.
