Safe and Effective Cleaning Routines

You don’t need harsh chemicals to keep a clean home. Most of the time, physical removal of dirt and microbes is enough.

🧼 Safer cleaning basics:

  • All-purpose:
    • DIY: 1:1 vinegar and water + a few drops of essential oil (not for stone surfaces).
    • Pre-made: Branch Basics, Better Life, AspenClean — all use plant-based surfactants and are EWG Verified or MADE SAFE.
  • Disinfecting:
    • 3% hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle.
    • 70% isopropyl alcohol (surface-safe, evaporates quickly).
  • Scrubbing:
    • Baking soda + castile soap or a few drops of water.
    • Bon Ami Powder Cleanser — effective, non-toxic.
  • Glass/mirrors: Vinegar + water or alcohol + water in a spray bottle.
  • Floors: Just water + a squirt of castile soap or Sal Suds (from Dr. Bronner’s).

🔄 General practices:

  • Use microfiber cloths for dusting and surface wiping — they pick up particles without spreading them.
  • Clean with the windows open or a fan on to vent fumes, even with safer products.
  • Rinse food-contact surfaces (cutting boards, counters) after cleaning.
