Off-Gassing from Furniture and Decor
When you bring new furniture, rugs, or building materials into your home, they often release a mix of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) — a process called off-gassing. Some materials emit these chemicals for months or even years.
🧪 Common off-gassed VOCs:
- Formaldehyde (from glues and pressed wood)
- Toluene, benzene, and xylene (from varnishes, paints, and adhesives)
- Flame retardants (in cushions, mattresses, and electronics)
⚠️ High-emission materials:
- Particleboard furniture and MDF (often used in bookshelves and cabinets)
- New carpets and carpet padding
- Vinyl flooring and wall coverings
- Foam cushions in couches, chairs, and bedding
- Synthetic drapes, blinds, and bedding
Symptoms of exposure include headaches, fatigue, sinus irritation, coughing, and in sensitive individuals, immune flare-ups.
