Safe and Effective Cleaning Routines
You don’t need harsh chemicals to keep a clean home. Most of the time, physical removal of dirt and microbes is enough.
🧼 Safer cleaning basics:
- All-purpose:
- DIY: 1:1 vinegar and water + a few drops of essential oil (not for stone surfaces).
- Pre-made: Branch Basics, Better Life, AspenClean — all use plant-based surfactants and are EWG Verified or MADE SAFE.
- Disinfecting:
- 3% hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle.
- 70% isopropyl alcohol (surface-safe, evaporates quickly).
- Scrubbing:
- Baking soda + castile soap or a few drops of water.
- Bon Ami Powder Cleanser — effective, non-toxic.
- Glass/mirrors: Vinegar + water or alcohol + water in a spray bottle.
- Floors: Just water + a squirt of castile soap or Sal Suds (from Dr. Bronner’s).
🔄 General practices:
- Use microfiber cloths for dusting and surface wiping — they pick up particles without spreading them.
- Clean with the windows open or a fan on to vent fumes, even with safer products.
- Rinse food-contact surfaces (cutting boards, counters) after cleaning.
