Ventilation, Filtration, and Maintenance

Improving indoor air quality requires both reducing inputs (toxins) and improving outputs (ventilation and filtration):

🌀 Ventilation:

  • Open windows regularly, especially during or after cleaning or cooking.
  • Run exhaust fans in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms — every time you use them.
  • Consider trickle vents or an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) for long-term air exchange.

🌀 Filtration:

  • Use a HEPA air purifier in key rooms (bedroom, living room).
  • Replace HVAC filters regularly with MERV-11 to MERV-13 filters — these capture finer particles and allergens.
  • If you have central air, keep ducts clean and vacuum return vents monthly.

🌀 Ongoing Maintenance:

  • Vacuum with a sealed HEPA vacuum weekly (bagged is better than bagless).
  • Dust with microfiber cloths that capture — not spread — particles.
  • Minimize clutter to reduce surfaces where dust settles.
  • Control humidity (ideally 40–50%) to discourage mold and dust mites.

By removing sources of airborne toxins and improving how your home breathes, you dramatically reduce one of the most constant exposure routes.
