Key Certifications and How to Use Them

Many products claim to be “natural,” “non-toxic,” or “eco-friendly” — but there’s no law defining these terms. That’s where third-party certifications can help.

Here are three of the most trusted:

  • EWG Verified: Issued by the Environmental Working Group. Products must be free from chemicals of concern, fully disclose ingredients, and meet strict health standards. Found on personal care and cleaning products.
  • MADE SAFE Certified: This label ensures that a product contains no known or suspected toxins to humans or the environment. Covers personal care, cleaning, baby products, candles, and more.
  • Green Seal: Focused on cleaning and institutional products. Ensures low toxicity, no carcinogens, biodegradable ingredients, and effective performance.

Other helpful labels:

  • EPA Safer Choice (cleaners, detergents)
  • USDA Organic (food, personal care)
  • Leaping Bunny (cruelty-free; often used alongside clean formulations)

When in doubt, prioritize ingredient transparency. If a company doesn’t fully list ingredients — especially for things like “fragrance” — that’s a red flag.
