Avoiding Lab Interference and Sampling Errors

qPCR analysis is sensitive to certain contaminants that can inhibit or skew results. Be mindful of:

Common Interferents:

  • Drywall or construction dust
  • Blood or rust (iron oxide)
  • Paint flakes or cellulose insulation
  • Salt, soil, or clay particles
  • Household cleaners, pesticides, or tobacco smoke

Tips to avoid interference:

  • Avoid visibly dusty construction areas
  • Don’t sample near recent repairs, leaks, or rusted materials
  • Store the sample in a cool, dry place until shipped
  • Communicate any known environmental factors with the lab
