Odors & Sensory Clues
Smell and sensation often reveal mold hidden from sight. A persistent musty, earthy odor typically indicates microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) produced by mold. These odors may be noticeable even before mold becomes visible, especially in poorly ventilated or damp areas.
Occupant-reported symptoms—such as nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, throat irritation, or fatigue that improve when away from the building—can signal mold exposure, especially in individuals with sensitivities or immune-compromising conditions. These reactions often correlate with elevated indoor humidity or chemical stress.
Additionally, condensation patterns or unexplained dampness—such as persistent moisture on windows, pipes, or HVAC grills—frequently accompany mold-prone environments. Feeling persistent chill or clamminess in air or surfaces long after a known water event may indicate retained moisture that fosters mold growth.
