Setting Up Your Work Area Safely

A little preparation of your work area can make a big difference in keeping the cleaning controlled, efficient, and safe. Setting up before you begin helps minimize dust, debris, and airborne spores from traveling to other parts of your home.

Steps to set up your work area:

  1. Ventilate carefully: If the bathroom has an exhaust fan that vents outdoors, turn it on. If not, crack a window slightly if possible. However, avoid strong airflow that could blow spores into living spaces.
  2. Close the door: If the bathroom door has gaps at the bottom, you can place a towel along the threshold to help seal it temporarily.
  3. Protect nearby surfaces: Use plastic sheeting, painter’s tape, or old towels to cover adjacent areas that you don’t plan to clean.
  4. Prepare disposal bags: Place trash bags nearby so removed caulk, grout, and used cloths can be immediately contained.
  5. Mist lightly if necessary: Lightly misting surfaces before removing caulk or grout can help reduce dust and spore release, but avoid soaking the area.

Remember, the goal is to keep the cleaning project as contained as possible. Taking 10–15 minutes to set up properly before beginning will create a safer and easier cleanup process.
