Removing Discolored Caulking Safely

Old, mold-stained caulking is very common around tubs and showers, especially in seams where moisture collects. Fortunately, caulk is designed to be removable and replaceable, making it an easy place to start your cleaning project.

Steps to remove discolored caulk:

  1. Use a caulk removal tool or a small utility knife to gently cut along both edges of the caulk line.
  2. Peel away the caulk by pulling it slowly and steadily. If it breaks apart, keep working in small sections.
  3. Remove all residue using a plastic scraper or the blunt edge of the caulk tool.
  4. Wipe down the area with a damp cloth to remove leftover particles.

Tip: Be patient and careful to avoid gouging or damaging tile surfaces or bathtub finishes. Slow, steady pressure is more effective than trying to force the caulk off quickly.

Once the discolored caulk is fully removed, the seam will be ready for deep cleaning and, later, new mold-resistant caulking.
