Appliances, Cords, and Smart Meters

In addition to hidden wiring issues, some everyday devices around the home can also raise EMF levels without much warning.

Key concerns include:

  • Power strips and extension cordsThese convenient devices can generate strong electric and magnetic fields, even when not heavily loaded. Using wall outlets directly, unplugging unused power strips, and organizing cords can reduce low-level, ongoing exposure.
  • Large electrical appliancesRefrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, and breaker panels all emit magnetic fields while operating. While these fields weaken quickly with distance, sleeping or sitting very close to them can increase daily exposure. Rearranging furniture — even by a few feet — can dramatically reduce risk.
  • Utility smart metersSmart meters installed by utility companies emit frequent bursts of radiofrequency (RF) radiation, sometimes thousands of times per day. To lower exposure from smart meters:
    • Request a non-transmitting analog meter if available
    • Install a smart meter shielding cover
    • Hang a Mylar emergency blanket behind the meter on the inside wall
    • Move beds, cribs, or desks away from meter walls

Smart meters are often a hidden but powerful source of indoor EMFs, and addressing them can have a big impact on creating a healthier space.
