Building Materials
The materials used in a home’s construction can directly impact air quality and occupant health. Many standard building products emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can linger in indoor air for months or even years. Prioritize homes that were built or remodeled using no-VOC or low-VOC paints, adhesives, and finishes. Formaldehyde-free insulation, natural fiber flooring, and solid wood cabinetry are also preferred.
Pressed wood products such as particleboard, MDF, and laminate cabinetry often off-gas formaldehyde. These emissions may trigger symptoms in chemically sensitive individuals. Ask about materials used in kitchens, closets, and built-ins, and request green certifications like GREENGUARD or LEED when available.
