Checking Below: Crawlspaces and Ceilings of Lower Floors

If your home has a crawlspace beneath it, or if the shower is on the second floor above another living area, it’s important to inspect these spaces for signs of water intrusion. Water follows the path of least resistance and will often show up below the source.

In crawlspaces or lower-level ceilings, look for:

  • Water stains or discoloration directly under the bathroom area.
  • Signs of wood rot or dampness on joists or subflooring.
  • Any signs of microbial growth or strong musty odors.

A flashlight and a little bit of caution go a long way here. If you see active dripping, soft or sagging wood, or heavy staining, it may point to a leak needing professional evaluation before surface cleaning. If ceiling stains are unusually large or spreading outward, this can indicate an ongoing leak rather than a one-time event.
