Filtration, Ventilation, and Natural Strategies to Control VOCs

Ventilation is your #1 ally for reducing VOCs. The more fresh air you bring in, the lower your VOC concentrations.

✅ Open windows regularly, especially after cleaning or using new products

✅ Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms to remove VOCs at the source

✅ Run your HVAC with outdoor air intake (if available) or crack windows if weather allows

✅ Use air purifiers with activated carbon filters – carbon captures VOCs by adsorption

✅ Add air-purifying houseplants – plants like spider plants, peace lilies, and aloe vera can absorb some VOCs (a helpful supplement, not a replacement for filtration)

Safe Ranges for TVOC Readings (mg/m³ or ppb):

Levelmg/m³ppb (approx.)Meaning
Green0–0.50–220 ppbHealthy range
Yellow0.5–2.0220–880 ppbMild risk for sensitive groups
Red>2.0>880 ppbHealth risks increase—take action

Note: Some air monitors display TVOCs in ppb instead of mg/m³. Multiply mg/m³ by ~440 for a rough ppb conversion.
