Water Treatment Plant Limitations
Municipal water treatment plants do an important job — but they aren’t designed to handle everything.
Common limitations include:
- Chemical disinfectants: While chlorine and chloramine kill bacteria, they don’t remove heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, or PFAS.
- Formation of byproducts: Disinfecting water can create new harmful compounds like trihalomethanes (THMs).
- Aging filtration technology: Many plants were built decades ago and weren’t designed to remove modern contaminants like microplastics, pharmaceutical residues, or hormone-disrupting chemicals.
Important takeaway:
Municipal treatment is a good first step — but it doesn’t guarantee complete water purity. Personal filtration and monitoring help close the gap.
