Natural Sources (Radon, Uranium, Mineral Issues)

Not all water contaminants come from human activities — some occur naturally in the environment.

Natural contaminants include:

  • Radon: A radioactive gas that can dissolve into groundwater, especially from granite-rich soils.
  • Uranium: Can occur naturally in some aquifers; linked to kidney damage with long-term exposure.
  • Hardness minerals (calcium, magnesium): Not harmful to health but can cause scaling, soap inefficiency, and plumbing damage.

Health risks vary:

  • Radon and uranium pose serious health risks if levels are high and exposure is prolonged.
  • Hard water is more of a nuisance than a health threat but can still indirectly affect skin and hair health through dryness and irritation.

Important note:

Testing your water — especially if you rely on a private well — is the only way to know if these natural contaminants are present.
