Emerging Threats (Pharmaceuticals, Microplastics, Endocrine Disruptors)
Modern life has introduced a new wave of contaminants into our water supply — many of which we’re still learning about.
Emerging threats include:
- Pharmaceutical Residues: Medications flushed into water systems — antibiotics, hormones, antidepressants — can accumulate over time.
- Microplastics: Tiny plastic fragments from bottled water, laundry, or synthetic textiles; increasingly found in both surface and groundwater.
- Endocrine Disruptors: Chemicals that mimic or interfere with natural hormones (such as BPA, phthalates, certain pesticides), leading to developmental, reproductive, and immune system problems.
Important note:
These contaminants are difficult to detect without specialized testing and are not fully removed by standard municipal treatment. Advanced filtration (like high-quality carbon filters or reverse osmosis) offers better protection.
