What are Total VOCs (TVOCs)? Where Do They Come From?
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are gases released from many everyday items and materials inside the home. When all of them are measured together, the reading is called Total VOCs (TVOCs). Some VOCs are harmless in small amounts—but others can cause irritation or more serious health effects, especially in sensitive individuals.
Common sources of VOCs:
- Paints, varnishes, adhesives
- Furniture and flooring (especially if new)
- Cleaning products and air fresheners
- Personal care products (like hair spray or nail polish)
- Office equipment (printers, copiers)
- Stored chemicals like gasoline or solvents
Many of these off-gas for months or even years, especially in newer or recently renovated homes.
