How to Choose Filters for HVAC Systems

Upgrading your central HVAC filter is a great way to boost whole-home filtration—but it comes with a few caveats.

First, check what your system can handle. Not all HVAC units are designed for high-MERV filters. A MERV 13 filter is excellent for particle capture, but it can also restrict airflow in some systems. If the fan isn’t strong enough to push air through, it could stress your equipment or reduce air delivery to rooms.

If your system allows it, a MERV 13 or 14 filter is a solid choice—especially for families dealing with asthma, allergies, or mold issues. If your system can’t handle higher-rated filters, consider using a MERV 11 and supplementing with portable HEPA purifiers in high-use areas like bedrooms.

Also, make sure the filter fits snugly. Gaps around the edges allow air (and contaminants) to bypass the filter entirely. And whatever filter you choose, replace it on schedule—usually every 1 to 3 months depending on use, season, and local air quality.
