Improving HVAC Filtration and Fresh Air Intake

Your HVAC system plays a central role in how particles move through the home. The filter you use, how often you replace it, and whether your system brings in fresh air all impact the amount of dust and contaminants recirculating in your living space.

Upgrade your filtration:

  • Use the highest MERV-rated filter recommended by your HVAC manufacturer. Most residential systems can safely handle MERV 11.
  • Avoid cheap fiberglass filters—they allow fine dust and spores to pass through easily.
  • Change filters every 1 to 3 months, depending on use and environmental conditions.

Add fresh air intake and positive pressurization (if possible):

  • fresh air intake system introduces filtered outdoor air and helps dilute indoor contaminants.
  • Systems designed to create positive pressure inside the home push out unfiltered air that may enter through gaps, crawlspaces, or walls.
  • These improvements are especially helpful in homes with past mold issues or dust infiltration from attics or garages.

A cleaner HVAC system starts with cleaner air going in—and better filtration coming out. This creates a foundation for all the other dust control strategies in your home.
