Providing Access to Key Areas and Systems

Your IEP will need access to areas of the home that often go overlooked during daily living. To support a complete inspection:

Make sure the following areas are unlocked, cleared, or accessible:

  • Under sinks and behind appliances (especially dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators)
  • Closets and storage areas with water pipes, HVAC components, or past water damage
  • The attic, crawlspace, and garage
  • All HVAC system components, including air handlers, ducts, and vents
  • Exterior walls and the perimeter of the foundation (if accessible)

Helpful Tip: If you’re unsure whether something will need to be accessed, err on the side of clearing space around it—especially in rooms where symptoms are worse or history suggests problems.
