Avoiding Misinterpretation of Test Results
Test results can feel overwhelming, especially when they include unfamiliar mold names or confusing numbers. But it’s important to interpret results in context—not in isolation.
A few key reminders:
- A “clean” test doesn’t always mean the space is safe—many spores settle quickly and may not be airborne during sampling.
- A “positive” test isn’t always cause for panic—some mold species are common outdoors or not typically associated with health concerns.
- Focus on patterns, not just numbers: Are spore counts elevated indoors compared to outdoors? Are water-damage molds showing up in specific rooms?
Your IEP should help you understand what the lab results mean in plain language, and how they relate to the rest of the inspection findings.
