When and Why to Use Surface Sampling
Surface sampling is most valuable in situations where there is visible discoloration, suspected contamination, or concern about specific surfaces or belongings.
Common use cases include:
- Confirming mold growth on drywall, wood framing, or tile grout.
- Checking belongings such as books, furniture, or fabric items after a known mold event.
- Evaluating contents before deciding whether to clean, store, or discard.
- Testing water-damaged materials during or after a remediation project.
- Gathering information for an IEP or physician when assessing environmental exposure.
Surface testing can also be helpful in homes where there is no obvious moisture issue, but unexplained symptoms continue. It allows you to rule in—or rule out—localized mold sources on key surfaces or personal items.
This method is not meant to replace full inspections or air testing. Instead, it provides targeted confirmation of whether mold is actually present on things you can touch and see.
