Understanding Surface Sampling
Surface sampling is a simple and direct way to check whether mold is growing on a specific area or item. It is most commonly used when there is visible discoloration—such as staining, dark spots, or fuzzy growth—or when there is concern that a surface may be contaminated, even if it looks clean.
This type of test collects material from the surface using a swab or a piece of clear tape. The sample is then submitted to a lab, where it is either examined under a microscope or cultured to allow mold to grow. Results typically show the genus of mold present (such as Penicillium or Aspergillus), and in some cases, further analysis can identify the specific species.
Surface sampling is one of the most accessible forms of mold testing. It doesn’t require any expensive tools, and the collection process is easy to learn. When used in the right situations, it offers valuable information that can help confirm mold growth and guide further steps.
