Why DIY Mold Testing?

DIY mold testing refers to testing methods that homeowners or tenants can perform themselves, usually with kits or tools ordered online. These approaches offer a helpful starting point, especially for people who are:

  • Curious if mold might be contributing to symptoms or building issues
  • Dealing with a minor event (like a leak under a sink)
  • Not ready to hire a professional or spend a lot on testing just yet

DIY tests can help identify whether further investigation is needed and may reveal surface or airborne mold presence. However, it’s important to understand that these tests are best used for initial screening, not for making major health or financial decisions.

DIY testing is best used when:

  • You need a starting point or peace of mind
  • You’re screening an environment after a known water event
  • You’re testing items or spaces before bringing them into a cleaner area
  • You’re doing follow-up monitoring after remediation

DIY testing is not recommended when:

  • Health symptoms are significant or worsening
  • You plan to base major life decisions on the results
  • You need official documentation for legal, insurance, or medical purposes

In those cases, it’s best to bring in a qualified indoor environmental professional (IEP) with experience working with medically sensitive individuals.
