How HVAC Settings Affect Humidity

Your HVAC system plays a big role in managing humidity—not just temperature. When settings aren’t dialed in properly, the system may fail to remove enough moisture from the air, or worse, reintroduce it.

Key HVAC settings to monitor:

  • Fan Mode: Set to AUTO (not ON)When set to “ON,” the fan runs continuously—even after the cooling cycle ends. This can cause moisture on the coils to evaporate back into the air.➤ Setting it to “AUTO” ensures the fan only runs during active cooling, allowing moisture to drain properly.
  • Cooling Cycles: Avoid Short CyclingVery short run times don’t allow enough time for moisture to be pulled out of the air. If your system is too big for your home, it may cool the space too quickly without enough dehumidification.➤ Let your HVAC technician know if your system seems to turn on and off frequently.
  • Thermostat SettingsIf the thermostat is set too high in summer, the system may not run long enough to dehumidify.➤ Keep settings cool enough for the A/C to cycle regularly during humid months.
