Stopping the Source of Damage

The first step in any emergency is to identify the source of the problem and stop it if possible. This action greatly reduces the risk of mold growth, bacterial contamination, and structural damage.

If the source is water-related:

  • Shut off the main water supply if safe to do so.
    • Most homes have a main shut-off valve located near the water meter or where the main line enters the home.
    • If you are unsure where it is, contact a plumber during non-emergency times to locate and label it.
  • If the leak is isolated (for example, a toilet or appliance), local shutoff valves may be used instead of turning off the whole house supply.

If the source involves structural damage (roof leaks, wall breaches):

  • Use heavy-duty tarps or plastic sheeting to block further water intrusion if safe to access.

If electrical hazards are present:

  • Do not enter standing water if electricity is active.
  • Turn off the electrical breakers to affected areas if safe to do so.
  • If unsure, call a licensed electrician or emergency services.

Knowing where your shutoff points are in advance can save critical time during an emergency.
